Otsuji Ga Taki was referred to as Ryuzaki Falls or Ishikawa Falls in the old days, with the Abukuma River flowing between Sukagawa City and Tamagawa Village and dropping 6 meters with a width of 100 meters.
The name comes from its running off water in the form of otsuji (zigzag). Because of its width, it is often referred to as "Little Niagara"
During the Edo Period, the Shirakawa clan villagers living below the falls could catch salmon, trout, sweetfish etc., but they had to give the first catch of the year to the lord of the clan, and the samurai living nearby were always waiting for them to catch fish. The expenses for staying there were paid, so they were exempt from other work.
