Near here was the battlefield for the Battle of Shirakawaguchi, when the East Army drove back the West Army. Upon their return, Saigo Tanomo and Yokoyama Chikara and others were camped and lying in wait at Mt. Inari
However, it is said that about 700 men lost their lives in the futile attempt and Shirakawa Castle fell. After the war, this dead and abandoned castle was maintained by volunteers and every year on the first of June, the head monk at Choju Temple prays at an event, and descendants of the Aizu Clan come.
The war dead
After the war, the townspeople of nearby Shinmachi erected a memorial for the war dead. It contains the words of Abe Clan senior statesman, Abe Akifu.
Monument for the repose of souls.
On this requiem monument Matsudaira Katamori wrote 304 names, beginning with that of Shirakawaguchi Vice-Governor-general, Yokoyama Chikara.
The grave of Tanabe Gunji
Tanabe Gunji thought the East Army was finished because of misleading intel he received from the West Army guide, Ohira Hachiro, and so he had Ohira whacked at Shirasaka lodging, Tsuruya. Tanabe then took his own life here, yet Hachiro's adopted child, Shinnosuke, made a grave for his enemy, Tanabe, interring him at Shirasaka Kannon Temple. The Shirakawa Aizu Association later reburied him here.
