There is a great deal of speculation about Eizo Temple.
One theory is that at the end of the Kamakura Period, Shirakawa Yuuki Munehiro’s priest, Enkan, offended the Shogunate. To atone for his wrongdoing he was entrusted to Munehiro to receive training and, with the feeling of a devoted disciple, he erected this temple in memory of Munehiro.
In another telling, Kusunoki Masanari received from the Godaigo Emperor a multi-armed deity which he passed on to Enkan and finally to Yuuki Munehiro, who enshrined it at the Kannon he built, and Enkan opened the temple.
Regardless of which story is right, this establishment was founded in Kenmu 3(1336). It is a prestigious temple in Shirakawa Yuuki’s territory.
