In Tensho 14 (1586), 12th generation Shirakawa Yuki built this as the seven-year memorial for his deceased mother, and it is believed that the temple gets its name from her posthumous Buddhist name, "Fukujuin Gesshin Shugo Taishi"
Long ago, it was positioned on Sekigawa Temple grounds but it is said to have been moved to its current location during the time of Shirakawa daimyo, Matsudaira Motochika (1695-1729).
