Mt. Inari is on the land of Aizu Clan, and became the battlefield for the Battle of Shirakawaguchi.
Fighting commenced on April 25 of a leap year, and the East Army approached and then withdrew.
On May 1, the West Army attacked from three sides, and overwhelmed the East Army with their stronger forces, resulting in a loss of 700 lives.
If you stand here at Inari Mountain, you can see the Oshu Road where the West Army attacked as well as the West Army camp at Mt. Komaru, and can really envision the battle stage.
Here a monument has been erected with the words of the East Army's governor-general, Aizu clansman Saigo Tanomo, expressing his position after the battle, reading: "Strong horns are something to be envied, but to conceal them we must appear to be weak."
