It is said that this temple got its origin at Kitahirayama (Izumizaki Village) when the mother of Minamoto Yoshitsune's followers, brothers Tsugunobu and Tadanobu Sato, heard that her sons had died in battle, then became a nun and built a hut.
After that, in Bunei 6 (1269), Shinran's grandchild Nyoshin opened "Otsuna Okunobo" the first oratory of the Jodo sect in North Kanto and Southern Oshu.
In Kanei 4 (1627), Nyoshin's mausoleum remained, and first Shirakawa Lord, Niwa Nagashige, ordered it moved to its current location down below Shirakawa Castle.
