In Tenpyo 2 (730) we believe Gyoki opened Mangan Temple.
There is also a legend that Minamoto Yoshitsune prayed for victory in battle here. In another recounting, Matsuo Basho, together with Sora, climbed Sekisan after visiting Shirakawa Seki ruins on the way to castle town Shirakawa.
On the summit at 619 meters there is a monument to Basho, and on a fine day, one can see the Nasu mountain range and Mt. Bandai etc. from there.
In addition, at Sekisan on the last Sunday of March, access to the mountain is opened, and of the "Utsukushima 100 Famous Beautiful Hills" it is the first mountain to be open so it is the best known.
