Tennonkotoku Temple was built as Shodo temple in the mid-Daido Era by (806-810) Hoso sect high priest, Shodo.
However, at the end of the Heian Period at the same time Sanjusangendo etc. were built, it underwent a revival and was renamed “Daihakuzan Tennonkotoku Temple”. It is said to have been moved to its current location in the time of Niwa.
On the grounds there are the graves and memorial stones of many historic figures, and also the grave of Ohara Shosuke who is mentioned in a famous folk song of the Aizu area, “Aizu Bandai San”.
Shosuke was a crapulent sot, and this grave is unique in that it mimics the shape of a sake bottle with a sake cup-shaped lid.
Posthumous name “Beijuu Donryo Shinshi”.
