This 45-meter tall katsura (Cercidiphyllum), estimated to be 370 years old, was selected as one of the top 100 large trees in Japan, and is clearly a miraculous, sacred tree where villagers gathered and prayed fervently. “Long, long ago, a fierce god appeared here, and tormented people on the road, so finally Shirakawa Castle Lord Matsudaira Sadanobu confined it to this tree with his sword”, or so the legend goes. This sword-katsura tree became Kenkatsura Shrine where people came to worship.
