Izumi Shikibu put up this building in what is now Shirakawa, Omotego Suzuriishi area, and started with three statues of Amida.
In Eiroku 2 (1559) it was moved to Shirakawa Motomachi, and named Josenji. During the governance of first Shirakawa daimyo, Niwa Nagashige (1627-1637) it was moved to its current location.
22nd generation Itsuhomare Hakuun(1764-1824) worked under Lord Matsudaira Sadanobu and wrote a book together with him, “Shukojushu”, with a famous illustration of the bonze.
