It is said, and shown in the drama, "Tenchinin, (Heaven, Earth, and Man)" that in Keicho 5 (1600), Naoe Kanetsugu together with his lord Uesugi Kagekatsu were waiting where they had planned and decided to build their "bastion for the showdown" with the Tokugawa Army as it moved east.
They were well prepared and their battle strategy was perfectly laid out and ready, but Ieyasu withdrew to fight Ishida Mitsunari at Sekigahara, so Kawagohara became instead the battlefield only of the "Illusion of the Shirakawa Showdown."
Now this preparation spot covers 370 meters, but war chronicles of the Edo Period suggest that the redoubt extended several kilometers
