In Tensho 3 (1575) it is said that the monk, Tokumine, founded Sekigawa Temple and retired from his labors there.
After that, from further recounting, we believe that in the first year of Manji Era (1658), the bonze, Donpa, revived the same temple and changed the name to “Manjiji”. Later the character “Ji” in “Manji” (meaning ‘to govern or subdue’) was changed it to the current “ji” character,( meaning ‘to possess’).
