Because they are at the border between Shimotsuke (Tochigi Prefecture) and Mutsu (Fukushima Prefecture), these two shrines are called Sakai-no-myojin.
Since ancient times, travelers who were stopped at the border worshipped at both shrines and prayed for safety along the way.
With Basho, travelling the "Narrow Road to the Deep North", Sora wrote in a travel diary that they arrived at Sakai-no-myojin, on April 20 on the old calendar (now early June) in Genroku 2 (1689), just in time for the rice planting season.
