The monk Tokuan Osho was born in Dewa District, Mogami, and during the time of Keicho (1596-1615) established this temple while praying the Lotus Sutra 10,000 thousand times.
Tokuan practiced asceticism in seclusion when he was at Shirakawa Sekisan, and then influential townspeople invited him to come to the land near the castle. This memorial monument was erected in Keicho 6 (1601) as a place to pray for the deceased, and remains to this day.
The current location, we are told, was endowed by the keeper of Shirakawa Castle.
