A poet representative of the Muromachi Era, Iio Sogi stopped at Shirakawa on the way to Oshu for a joint project to write 10,000 renga, or collaborative poems, in one day.
He asked a woman passing by about it and she replied that the event was over, so he asked her, "Would you sell this cotton?"
She answered him with a poem, "We have cotton to give to the Sweetfish living in the Abukuma River." He was so surprised that a lady just walking by would answer with a poem that was so right on the mark, that he cut short his travels in the middle of his journey and returned to Tokyo; this story is written on the monument.
