In Jisho 4 (1180), two samurai sons of Sato Motoharu from Shinobuo Shoji (now Fukushima City) followed Lord Minamoto Yoshitsune and after ordering them faithfully to do his bidding, Sato stabbed his cherry-wood cane into the ground. The traditional story has it that to honor the death of his loyal sons in battle, the cherry-wood cane began to sprout and grew into a big cherry tree.
In addition, it is believed that after seeing this cherry tree, Basho headed for Sekiyama.
