On April 7, 1978 (Showa 53), Toriuchi Reliquary was designated a prefectural historic site and cultural heritage of Ishikawa Town.
It is a remnant from the late Jomon to the middle of the Yayoi Periods.
In particular, during the first half of the Yayoi Period, skeletal remains were placed in earthenware vessels and later buried again, and many re-interments of this type were found here, making it a famous site in Japan.
In addition, earthenware water gods in the style of the Tokai area and Kyushu Onga River area were unearthed.
It is thought that the former were brought directly from the Tokai area.
From the Toriuchi Reliquary we can learn a great deal about the northward spread of Yayoi culture.
In addition, all over the country, only 20 places with this practice of human face earthenware have been excavated.
