This kiln was erected in Nishigo Village in 1981.
In our efforts to give expression to the clay, we eschew glazes. Everything is handmade from local clays on a kick-wheel, and wood-fired. This unique pottery is known as “Yanagisawa Ware”.
【Yanagisawa-ware】
No glazes are applied before firing. This lets the nature of fire affect the clay directly. Sesame seed-like eruptions emerge on the surface and things like ash change the color of the works. “The flickering licking of the wood fire creates all sorts of different effects.”
Takahashi-san has enjoyed painting and making things since he was little. When he became acquainted with ceramics, he thought, “I want to make this myself”, and after working in a Yokohama company for one year, he retired. After that he spent eight years in Tochigi Prefecture’s pottery-town Mashiko, and in Okayama Prefecture, Bizen, learning the craft. In Nishigo Village next to his hometown, Shirakawa City, he spent a half year building a climbing kiln, and named this work “Yanagisawa-ware” from this area.
Nishigo Village has Kashi Hot Springs (Nikko National Park) and an area blessed with beautiful mountain fields and kind folks.
